Bob watched himself leave the slums of Lagos, past the space power grid collectors and substations of the supercollider ring that first ended this Earth. He carefully inserted a tiny daemon inside the mind of the Bob coming aboard Terra Nova and again watched the Council meeting with the Terra Novan elders. The thought-plastic space opened up and molded itself around each attendee—Patricia’s old student Mohesha, Tyrel, the other assembled elders, and Willy, his virtual presence wedged between avatars of Bob and Sid and Vince flanking them. Mikhail Butorin lurked in a dark patch of the shared sensory space where light seemed to come from within and without but didn’t penetrate near him. This version of Mikhail had already met with another version of Bob, or perhaps he thought it was Bob himself. He must have known he was being watched and didn’t reveal anything to Tyrel. The older gangster was used to the arts of deception.

“You have many questions.” Tyrel brought the meeting to order. “As do we.”

An image of an oceanic platform appeared in the shared meeting space. It was Atopian in design but looked nothing like Atopia itself. Its surface was angular, jet black. The attack platforms.

“The end is coming,” said Tyrel.
